A splendid example of adaptive use, the Center for the Visual Arts opened its doors in 1984 after a vigorous advocacy and fund raising campaign carried out by the Greater Denton Arts Council and its supporters in the early 1980’s.

Originally built as a maintenance facility for the city of Denton, the structure was completed in 1929. (The original dedication stone may be viewed on the North side of the building). By the 1970s, the building had fallen into disuse and had deteriorated significantly by 1981 when it was leased to the Greater Denton Arts Council by the city. This lease agreement, still in effect, determined that Greater Denton Arts Council would renovate and operate the facility and in return the City of Denton would provide utilities and assistance with certain maintenance and repair needs. This partnership has allowed citizens of Denton and arts organizations to have the benefits of a public arts center with significant private support.

The Center is in operation more than 350 days a year. It houses The Meadows Gallery, The East Gallery, the Ema Ruth Russell Studio (dance), Festival Hall, and 2 classroom crafts studios.

The Galleries

The Meadows Gallery and East Gallery are Denton’s public art galleries. Operating on a year round schedule they host between sixteen and twenty exhibitions annually.

The Crafts Room/Classroom

The Center has two classrooms (capacity 40 and 20) that are used for meetings and classes. Equipped with sinks, drying screens and a kiln, the rooms are suitable for a variety of visual arts activities.

Ema Ruth Russell Studio

Located on the second floor of the Center, this dance rehearsal room is used by a variety of organizations ranging from folk dance to ballet.

Festival Hall is a large multi-purpose room in the middle of the CVA. It hosts remarkable array of uses including meetings, rehearsals, concerts, social events, festivals, workshops, city functions, and many other activities.

Festival Hall is available to rent and serves as a popular location for weddings, reunions and school events.
